Career and Life Readiness
Not only must our students graduate, they must graduate with the skills to be prepared for future opportunities, whether a job, further academics, or training to become a much-needed skilled worker. Studies show that students start deselecting careers as early as elementary school. The earlier we can expose students to different types of careers and occupations to demystify some of the career options that are available to them the better. I will work to search for innovative ways to improve attendance, expand mentoring, advocate for pre-apprenticeship, on the job training (OJT) and internships.
We are in a world of constant change where a proactive response will yield more effective results than a reactive response. We need to create policy to support consistent communication throughout the district and put a plan in place to document output. Our public schools are most successful when parents, teachers, administrators, and the public partner in the best interests of all our students. We need to share best practices across schools so that all schools can learn from what works. I will work in partnership with students, parents, educators and the community to provide the resources needed for students to succeed.
The recent national focus on standardized testing has illuminated the achievement gap between students from diverse backgrounds and the average student. Specifically, students of color are performing at lower levels than the average student. School communities should support healthy, positive development of students and help them grow their unique gifts and talents. Communities, parents, teachers, and community-based organizations have unique and important solutions to improving outcomes for our students and educational systems. We must welcome the opportunity to be inclusive, make appropriate accommodations, and celebrate the assets of every student. I believe the district should adopt a student-centered, racial equity and social justice focused lens in all decisions.
